How to tell a reproduction chandelier from an antique chandelier
In recent months we have noticed that chandeliers are appearing which look antique but with our experience we can tell that they are actually not old. These chandeliers are usually from Egypt or Morocco and they are being produced to look old by being stripped with a solution which gives an antique effect, This corrodes the metal and gives it a rusty appearance and an antique look.
To tell if you are being duped into thinking you are buying an antique chandelier when really it is not the tell tale signs are:
The Pinning
Genuine antique chandeliers are pinned in a traditional method. The pins should have a pinhead and the effect should be a hook and eye (photo). Modern replica chandelier pinning is with thin wire which is just put through the crystals and twisted. The wire will usually be new looking.
Price
The prices is also a giveaway. You cannot buy an Antique Chandelier for very little money. The replica chandeliers are being sold for low prices and this would not be possible if they were genuine antique chandeliers.
Stock
Some dealers even boast that they have thousands of chandeliers in their stock, again hard to believe if they are genuine antique chandeliers..
Description:
Replica chandeliers usually have no description of date and country of origin. There may be a description of how the chandelier is put together and of the glas, ie, the general look but there will be no period or style included.
